Research

  • Dr. Umesh Srikantha served as a co-investigator in a multinational, multicenter study designed to assess the effectiveness of a novel drug, AP12009—now known as Trabedersen. This drug, a TGF-β2 antisense phosphorothioate oligonucleotide inhibitor of TGF-β2, was evaluated in adult patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas. The research was conducted under the title: "A multi-national, multi-centre, open-label, active-controlled, randomised parallel-group dose-finding study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of two doses of AP 12009, administered intratumorally as continuous high-flow microperfusion over 7 days every other week." The study received funding from Anti-sense Pharma, Germany, and coordination in India was managed by SIRO Clinpharm Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai. Our centre, NIMHANS in Bangalore, contributed 14 test subjects to the study.
  • Dr. Umesh Srikantha participated in a multi-institutional project titled “A prospective study to correlate gene signatures with clinical outcomes of astrocytomas and identification of potential therapeutic target(s) in glioblastoma.” This research was supported by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India. The findings contributed to several publications on glioblastoma biomarkers in esteemed peer-reviewed cancer journals, including 'Clinical Cancer Research' and 'Cancer Biology and Therapy'.
  • Dr. Umesh Srikantha contributed to a study focused on evaluating the clinical and histological features, as well as the expression of immunohistochemical markers in medulloblastoma with an aim to correlate these aspects with recurrence rates. The study identified the most critical predictors of recurrence as the extent of resection, use of chemotherapy, presence of gross anaplasia, and overexpression of c-erb B2. These factors were integrated into a 'clinical-histological-immunohistochemical' model for medulloblastoma. The findings from this study were submitted to NIMHANS and published in the British Journal of Neurosurgery.
